Wessex: Kingdom of Gravel
The Kingdom of Wessex was an Anglo-Saxon Kingdom dating from 519AD to 927AD, before England became unified. It encompasses the counties we now know as Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset, throughout the four hundred years the Kingdom also encompassed Kent, Sussex, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight.
So Wessex is a pretty special to live and even better to explore.
Boasting two long distance routes alone , The original endurance trail or National Trail ‘The South Downs Way’ linking Winchester to Eastbourne.(160km)
Next we have the newly launched Jewel in Cycling UK’s Crown the epic King Alfred’s Way . (350km)
Then lets not forget the New Forest National Park with over hundred miles (160km) of recognised off road routes , famed by some locals as a gravel ‘mecca’.
Heading further west we hit the Jurassic Coast, and the popular trails in the Purbeck Hills. These are just the areas that are popular and already documented within the gravel ‘scene’. Heading further West then North links you back to the Wessex Ridgeway.
If you were to link all these areas together just riding around the edge there is over 600km of rideable trails off road.
With our base and home being between the New Forest and Jurassic Coast were ideally placed to explore everything in between. We’ve created three of our own routes which are challenging but achieveable but each with slightly different terrain.
Its been our home forever and we hope you want to join us.
